Previously, we welcomed the new iOS 7, and now comes the latest iteration of the iPhone. Months of speculations, rumours and leaks. And finally Apple introduces the latest upgrade to its flagship iPhone. This marks the end of the sales of iPhone 5, replacing it with iPhone 5S and the cheaper iPhone 5C. Growing and heavy competition in the smartphone market made Apple to launch two iPhone models at once. As the name suggests iPhone 5S is an upgrade to the previous iPhone, but some of these upgrades are pretty solid.
The iPhone 5s:
Display & Body
The 5S has a four-inch display, same as before. With a minor change in the Home button, it retains all the body specifications of iPhone 5. In fact iPhone 5S is compatible with all the cases of iPhone 5. Apple now gives you a GOLD colour option also along with Space Gray and Silver. It is 7.6 millimetres thin and 112 grams light.
NEW PROCESSOR
While same from outside, it has been restructured from its core. The 5S has a faster, 64-bit processor, which lets it handle more data simultaneously compared with traditional 32-bit systems. It’s the first 64-bit chip in a smartphone. According to Apple, the processor is more than twice as fast as the A6, with a 40x CPU performance bump. Graphics are said to be 56x faster. The iPhone 5S will include a “motion co-processor” called the M7 that allows the phone to process data from sensors without waking up the phone itself. Now, it’s worth waiting that how this upgrade practically affects the battery life!
Touch ID – Fingerprint Scanner
It is the most talked about innovation from Apple. Calling the passcodes cumbersome, Apple has implemented a biometric sensor to secure the phone. Put your finger on the Home button, and just like that your iPhone unlocks. It’s a convenient and highly secure way to access your phone. Your fingerprint can also approve purchases from iTunes Store, the App Store, and the iBooks Store. The sensor is 170 microns thin, 500 ppi resolution, has 360-degree readability, and scans sub-epidermal skin layers to avoid conflicts due to dry skin, or dirt. It uses a low radio frequency signal to map the unique lines of its owner’s index finger or thumb.
A new iSight camera
Although with the same Megapixel capabilities, it has increased sensor size by about 15%, providing more stable pictures. When you take a photo, the camera takes multiple photos and picks the sharpest one for your viewing pleasure, providing a 33% increase in light sensitivity. The new camera will offer a slow-motion option, shooting at 720p and 120 frames per second. The new “true-tone” flash uses dual LEDs (one warmer and one cooler) to account for the lighting in the room and to light the shot optimally according to the camera app’s monitoring. The iPhone 5S sports a new 1.2-megapixel front-facing FaceTime Camera that comes with a Backside illumination sensor (BSI sensor) for capturing low-light images and support for 720p HD video recording.
The iPhone 5S will cost $199, $299 or $399 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.
The iPhone 5C
Sporting a polycarbonate casing, the iPhone 5C is heavier at 132 grams, while the iPhone 5 weighted just 112 grams. Internally it remains very similar to the iPhone 5, running the same A6 chip and featuring the same 4-inch Retina display with a resolution of 640×1136 pixels at 326ppi pixel density.
The iPhone 5C sports the same 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.2-megapixel front-facing FaceTime HD camera that’s seen on the iPhone 5. However, the iPhone 5C’s camera has been slightly improved as it has an f/2.4 aperture, backside illumination sensor, a hybrid IR filter and the ability to zoom-in while recording videos. Even the front camera on the iPhone 5C has a backside illumination sensor for taking low-light pictures. The device will come in green, yellow, blue, white and red colors. iOS 7 will automatically match the color of your iPhone 5c out of the box. CEO Tim Cook calls the 5C “more fun and colorful” than any other iPhone. The iPhone 5C will cost $99 for a 16 gigabyte model and $199 for a 32 gigabyte model with a two-year wireless contract.
